Taking a bath is one of the best ways to relax, but buying a bathtub can be a stressful decision. There are various sizes, shapes, and materials available, but it is a decision you want to get right. Bathtubs come in a lot of different material options, too. On the less expensive end, you’ve got tubs made with steel and fiberglass. Fiberglass could be porous, making them difficult to clean and very flimsy. Common bathtub materials have many pros and cons, and we’re here to explain each. Read on to learn more!
Fiberglass Bathtubs
Fiberglass is a type of reinforced plastic that is formed into layers and then molded into a bathtub shape before it is coated with a layer of gelcoat resin on the very surface. At very affordable prices, fiberglass tubs are great for those on a tighter budget. Due to the lightweight nature of the material used, they’re also very easy to maneuver around a house and install, plus any damage could be repaired easily.
Acrylic Bathtubs
Acrylic is formed by taking one solid sheet of combined materials like resins, fillers, and appropriate dye, which are heated and molded into the shape of a bathtub, and finally reinforced with fiberglass. It’s a non-porous material, unlike regular fiberglass, and therefore won’t absorb any excess water. It will also retain the heat from the temperature of your water, and also repel mildew or general bathroom stains. These types of bathtubs have heat liners or other systems built in to keep the water as warm as possible. Nonslip is achieved by the grooves in the bottom of the tub, so dirt does not gather inside it.
Stone Resin Bathtubs
Stone resin is a material that is used to mimic the look of natural stone. Like most resin, the color doesn’t fade with repeated use. It’s got an incredibly long lifespan, lasting for a long time without the need for constant repair, and when it has to be discarded, stone resin is entirely recyclable. It’s also viewed as a more luxurious bathtub material with the ability to withstand a large amount of weight and punishment. Also, cleaning is made simple and easy. Most stains and mildew wash away pretty easily with some warm water.
