How to Pick the Proper Lighting for Your Bathroom Design

Proper lighting is a crucial part of bathroom design.

The light fixtures and placements that came standard in your bathroom probably are not doing a good job of improving the look and feeling of your bathroom. In fact, they might not even be doing their job well, which is to light the bathroom. One ceiling fixture is not going to shine light in all the right places of the bathroom, and it certainly is not going to help create a very relaxing oasis, which is where bathroom design is headed. Read on to learn more!

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting is the starting point of light in any room, like a base. A central fixture in your ceiling does the trick, and was probably installed when the house was built. Don’t think you have to stick with whatever the builder ended up installing. This is a good place to add style to your bathroom with a chandelier or other attention piece. When installing a ceiling light, position it over the walkway area instead of directly above a spot where you will stand. Light above your head will be unflattering, while light from behind will help you see yourself in the best light.

Task Lighting Around the Mirror

Your bathroom mirror is where you see which face you will be showing to the world every day. If the only lights you have in that location are recessed ceiling fixtures, you will be battling face shadows as you try to groom for the day. To create even lights for your face, install some sconces or a set of vertical fixtures on either side of the mirror, 30 to 40 inches apart. Make sure to keep the center of every light fixture at around eye level. If you do not have space for lights on the side of the mirror, pick a fixture for above the mirror that’s around 24 inches or longer. Mount it around 75 to 80 inches above the floor, and pick bulbs that are around 150 watts.

Accent Lighting

The proper accent lighting could really improve the spa-like quality of your bathroom. Strip lighting under wall-mounted cabinets creates a very beautiful floating effect. Focus a light on a piece of art to create an elegant feeling in your bathroom. Visit Kenwood Kitchens if you need help with lighting fixtures for your bathroom design!
